Origin and history

The Church of Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix is a Catholic church located in Poyans, Haute-Saône department, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Built in the first quarter of the seventeenth century, it is a typical example of the religious architecture of this period in this rural area.

The building was classified as historic monuments in 1960, recognizing its heritage value. Among the protected elements are a carved cross located on the south side of the church, classified by decree of 24 December 1959. This protection reflects the artistic and historical importance of some of its elements.

The church is located in the heart of the town of Poyans, at the approximate address of 1 Rue du Four. It belongs to the commune and is part of the local architectural landscape, marked by a religious and rural history. The Haute-Saône, where Poyans is located, is a region rich in historical monuments, often linked to Christian history and the community life of villages.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, when the church was built, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté was a mainly rural region, where churches played a central role in the social and spiritual life of communities.
