Origin and history
The church of the Conversion-de-Saint-Paul de Villevieux, located in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was built between 1700 and 1703, as indicated by the chronogram BENEFAC DOMINE BONIS ET RECTIS / PSALM. 124 engraved on its facade. This place of worship, representative of the first quarter of the eighteenth century, illustrates the architectural and spiritual evolutions of the region after the Great Century, in a context of reconstruction and affirmation of local ecclesiastical power.
Classified as a Historical Monument, the church owes its protection to its portal, registered by ministerial decree on 3 February 1971. This portal, a remarkable architectural element (cadastre B 178), bears witness to the know-how of the artisans of the time and the stylistic influences baroque or classical that then marked Franche-Comté. The location of the building, at 14 Rue Nationale in Villevieux, makes it a central heritage landmark for this rural town of Jura.
The construction of the church is part of a period when parish churches played a major social role, serving as both a place of worship, a community gathering and a symbol of village identity. In Burgundy-Franche-Comté, a region marked by a strong Catholic tradition and a rural economy, these buildings often reflected the local prosperity and ambitions of notables or religious communities. The lack of mention of specific sponsors in available sources suggests a collective realization, probably supported by the parish and the municipality.
Today, the church belongs to the municipality of Villevieux, as the data of the Merimée database attest. Its state of conservation and its openness to the public are not specified, but its registration as Historic Monuments guarantees legal protection and heritage recognition. GPS coordinates and approximate address (latitude/longitude) place the building at the heart of the village, facilitating access for visitors interested in the religious and architectural history of the region.
