Origin and history
The church of the Décollation-de-Saint-Jean-Baptiste, located in Breuilaufa in Haute-Vienne, dates from the 3rd quarter of the 13th century. It originally belonged to Breuilaufa's hospital command office, dependent on the order of St John of Jerusalem, and served as the capital of the local parish. His existence as a hospital parish was attested as early as 1288, while the command office itself was mentioned in 1310. Breuilaufa then reported to the great priory of Auvergne, an administrative division of the order. In the course of the reorganizations, she became a member of the Commanderie de Limoges (or the Palais), illustrating the territorial changes of the Hospitallers in Limousin.
The present building seems to reuse walls of an earlier Romanesque church, transformed in the 13th century to adopt a single nave rectangular plan of two spans and flat bedside. The nave was arched from this period, while the west facade, with a gable bell tower, was redesigned in 1658 (dated engraved on the door). The western portal, typical of the Limousin style, features two windows and a frieze with capitals. Inside, the triumphal arch rests on columns decorated with hooks and palmettes, characteristic of the thirteenth century. The choir's capitals also retain carved decorations of that time.
The church was listed as a historical monument on 13 December 1978, recognizing its heritage importance linked to hospital history and its medieval architecture. It now depends on the municipality of Breuilaufa (code Insee 87022) and remains a testimony of the settlements of the order of St John of Jerusalem in New Aquitaine, especially in the former diocese of Limoges. Its sober plan and decorative elements reflect both the functional constraints of a commandery and the regional artistic influence.
According to the sources, Breuilaufa was a sub-commander of the Hospitallers, mentioned as early as 1248 as a member of the commandery of the Palais de Limoges. At the end of the 18th century, the parish was under the rule of Saint-Junien, stressing its anchor in the local religious network. The Hospitallers, known for their charitable and military role, used this site as a relay between their limo possessions. The absence of sumptuous decorations suggests a vocation, above all practical, in the service of pilgrims and brothers of order.
The archival sources, such as the works of Louis-Augustin Vayssière (1884), confirm the importance of Breuilaufa in the medieval Limousin, where the order of Saint John of Jerusalem possessed several commanderies. The church, though modest, thus embodies a link of the hospital networks that structured the region, between Auvergne and Poitou. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments makes it today a protected heritage, open to the discovery of this unknown part of French religious history.
