Origin and history
The church of the Décollation-de-Saint-Jean-Baptiste, located in the hamlet of Châtillon-sur-Bar (comune of Belleville-et-Châtillon-sur-Bar, Ardennes), has a composite architecture. Its façade, rebuilt in the 19th century, contrasts with older elements: the five-paned choir and the arches of the 13th century, as well as 16th century vaults and columns. Two liturgical swimming pools (15th and 16th centuries) and a marble high altar, surmounted by a painting depicting the take-off of Saint John the Baptist, bear witness to his rich interior heritage.
The building was historically dependent on the Abbey of Mouzon, highlighting its medieval religious anchor. Inscribed to historical monuments by order of 11 October 1930, it is located at the crossroads of local roads, behind the former town hall of the hamlet. Its red and black marble lutrin, as well as a second made of wood, add to its remarkable character, reflecting later additions or restorations.
Sources also mention specific protected elements, such as Gothic structures and liturgical objects, while its precise location (2 Church Street) and Insee code (08057) confirm its anchoring in the Ardennes department, in the Greater East region. The lack of details on its current use (visits, cults) leaves a mystery on its contemporary vocation.
