Olivier de Royères - Founder of the Priory
On his return from crusade (1097).
Origin and history
The church of the Nativity-de-la-Vierge de Royères is based in a priory founded around 1097 by Olivier de Royères upon his return from the first crusade. This priory, initially dependent on the abbey of Saint-Martial de Limoges, was incorporated into the abbey in 1441. The present building, built in the 13th century, has a unique nave of three spans, the last of which is the choir, separated by doubles in broken arch.
The interior architecture is distinguished by arches with dogive crosses with chamfered edges, with formations and ribs resting on chamfered pillars. The vaults, restored in 1879, complete this structure. A fire dug in the south wall, dated from the 14th century, and a bell tower-wall of stone pierced by a limousine gate decorated with frieze capitals characterize the exterior. The upper part of the bell tower was probably redone in the 19th century.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 22 January 1992, the church includes in its protection its medieval fire. Property of the commune of Royères, it illustrates the religious and architectural heritage of Limousin, marked by late Romanesque and early Gothic influences. Its history also reflects the links between local lords, such as Olivier de Royères, and regional monastic institutions, including Saint Martial Abbey.
