Origin and history
The church of the Nativity of Our Lady of Montfaucon came into being in the early 14th century, with the foundation of a first church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in 1311, located near the castle of Montfaucon. This original building, destroyed by fire in 1552, was rebuilt before being permanently replaced in the 18th century. The negotiations for its reconstruction, begun in 1743, ended only in 1775 with the laying of the first stone of a new building, designed by architect Louis Beuque.
The current neoclassical church was built from 1775 to 1785. It is characterized by a three-neves arched basilical plane, rhythmized by sixteen Tuscan doric columns, and a facade adorned with a four-column porch, added in 1826. The bell tower, typically comtois with its imperial dome, dominates the choir. This monument illustrates the religious architectural evolution in Franche-Comté, mixing local and classical influences.
Ranked among the historical monuments since April 16, 2009, the church of Montfalcon also reflects the community and religious dynamics of the region. Its history reflects the challenges of reconstruction and adaptation of places of worship to the needs of the populations, in a context marked by the social and political transformations of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
