Origin and history
The Church of the Holy Family was built to replace the former chapel of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais, which had become too small for a population from 600 to 14,000 inhabitants between 1825 and 1900. In 1910, Abbé Lavalle, a local parish priest, acquired land on Rue Paul-de-Kock to build a new building, marking the beginning of an ambitious project for the growing Catholic community.
The first stone was blessed on 18 March 1912 by Canon Lefebvre, archdeacon of Saint-Denis, symbolizing the official launch of the works. The church was inaugurated on 1 May 1913, ascension day, by Cardinal Amette, before the old chapel was decommissioned in 1920. This monument thus embodies the architectural and spiritual transition of Pre-Saint-Gervais at the beginning of the twentieth century.
From an elongated plan to the west, the building consists of a nave divided into four spans and a flat bedside, reflecting the canons of religious architecture of the time. Its location in the Seine-Saint-Denis department in Île-de-France is a testament to the Christian heritage of France, linked to the growing urbanization of the Parisian suburbs.
