Origin and history

Saint-Sauveur de Saint-Sauveur-d'Aunis Church, located in Charente-Maritime (New Aquitaine), is one of the few religious buildings of the 11th and 12th centuries that survived the wars of Religion in Aunis. Built according to a Latin plan with transept, lower sides and absidioles, it has undergone major modifications: elevation of the walls, addition of foothills, and replacement of its original bell tower with a modern structure. Its interior, on the other hand, retains remarkable elements such as an octagonal dome and carved capitals.

The church once belonged to a priory dependent on Nuaillé Abbey. The original vaults of the nave have disappeared, but the doubles, columns and capitals (derived from animal and plant motifs) remain. The lower side vaults, later, date from a period after the initial construction. Ranked a Historical Monument in 1925, it illustrates Romanesque architectural evolution and subsequent adaptations (XIV and XVIII centuries).

Externally, few primitive elements are visible due to transformations. The foothills, added to strengthen the structure, and the modern bell tower contrast with the original appearance. Inside, the cross of the transept, covered with a dome worn by tubes, and the historical capitals (representing fantastic animals, saints and foliage) testify to the artistic richness of the era. The building, a communal property, remains a significant example of the Romanesque religious heritage in Poitou-Charentes.

The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) stress its inscription under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 27 February 1925. Its exact address, 5151 Place de l'Eglise in Saint-Sauveur-d-Aunis (code Insee 17396), and its approximate location (precision: 5/10) are documented. The church, open to the visit, embodies both a medieval heritage and traces of the religious conflicts that marked the region.
