Clocher of the former chapel Saint-Jean de Leuhan, re-educated on the new church of Treffiagat (ca. C 3251): inscription by decree of 28 October 1926

Origin and history

The church of Léchiagat, located in Treffiagat in the Finistère, is an ancient chapel dating from the first half of the sixteenth century. This historic monument, now partially extinct, bears witness to the religious architecture of the Breton Renaissance. Its bell tower, built of cut stones and decorated with remarkable sculptures, is one of the few elements preserved after the abandonment of the site in the early twentieth century.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the chapel of Léchiagat was abandoned in favour of a new church built closer to the town of Treffiagat. The materials of the old chapel were then used as a quarry for the construction of a local school. Only the western gable and the bell tower were spared. The latter, disassembled stone by stone, was then raised on the porch of the new church, where it remains today as a vestige of the original building.

The bell tower of the former chapel Saint John of Leuhan, now integrated into the church of Treffiagat, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 28 October 1926. This classification specifically concerns its stone structure and carved elements, which illustrate the know-how of the artisans of the time. The monument is now managed by a local association, although its access and modalities of visit are not specified in the available sources.

The exact location of the old chapel is approximate, with an estimated accuracy of 5/10 according to available data. The current GPS coordinates point to 8 Rue de l'Eglise in Treffiagat, but this indication remains to be confirmed. The original site, now extinct, retains only indirect traces through the transplanted bell tower, symbol of the town's architectural memory.
