Origin and history

The Church of Mondement, located in the commune of Mondement-Montgivroux, is a historic monument classified entirely since 2017. It bears traces of the fighting of the First World War, including those of the first battle of the Marne in September 1914. The walls of the building, especially that of the north nave, keep inscriptions recalling the burials of French and German soldiers dated September 10, 1914, bearing witness to the intensity of the clashes in this region.

This place of memory is emblematic of the violent fighting that took place in the Marne during the First World War. The battle of the Marne, often called "the miracle of the Marne", marked a turning point in the conflict by stopping the German advance towards Paris. The church, through its funeral inscriptions, embodies the duty of remembrance towards the soldiers who fell during these major historical events.

Classified as a historical monument in 2017, the Church of Mondement is fully protected, including war-related commemorative elements. Its official inscription underscores its heritage and memorial importance, while preserving the tangible traces of local and national history. The building is located on the Place du Commander Gauvain, in the heart of the village, and remains a strong symbol of French resistance during the Great War.
