Origin and history
The church of Saint-Masmes, located in the eponymous village of the Marne department, is a Catholic religious building built in the 13th century. It is dedicated to Saint George and Saint Vrain, two emblematic figures of local Christianity. It was classified as a historical monument in 1921 and bears witness to the medieval religious architecture of the Champagne-Ardenne region, now integrated into the Great East.
The church houses remarkable furniture, including a bell dated from the 16th century and a statue of Virgin with the Child depicting Jesus playing with a bird. Two inscriptions, one of 1595 mentioning Nicolas Nouvellet, the other of 1678 evoking Jean Nouveaut and his wife Nicole Pietre, are visible on the facade. These elements illustrate the local history and devotional practices of the bourgeois of Reims in modern times.
The building, owned by the commune of Saint-Masmes, has been fully protected since a classification order in 1921. Its exact address, 5 Place de la Mairie, and its Insee code (51505) confirm its anchoring in the Marnais territory. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and the Merimée base, highlight its heritage and religious importance in the region.
