Origin and history

The Saint-Romain church of Saint-Romain-de-Vignague is a Catholic building located in the municipality of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, Gironde, south of the city, along the departmental road D670 (former RN 670). This monument, located in the heart of the Saint-Romain-de-Vignague, illustrates the rural religious architecture of the region, marked by successive transformations over the centuries.

The church was originally built in the 11th century, then its bedside was rebuilt in the 12th century, before undergoing further modifications in the 14th century. These changes reflect the stylistic and liturgical evolutions of each period, while maintaining an overall structure characteristic of southern Romanesque and Gothic churches. The building was partially classified as historic monuments in 1925 (for its choir and apse), and then fully registered in 2002, highlighting its heritage value.

The site, isolated south of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, reflects the importance of places of worship in the medieval organization of the territory. Near historical communication channels such as RN 670, the church has probably played a central role in the spiritual and community life of the inhabitants, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Its recent registration (2002) confirms the desire to preserve this local heritage, often unknown but representative of Aquitaine religious history.
