Origin and history
Saint-Sauveur Church, located in Saint-Sauveur-de-Pierrepont in the English Channel, is a 12th and 15th century religious building. Built on a hill overlooking the marshes, it presents a Romanesque choir with a flat bedside, with vaults on crossed by primitive warheads. Its bas-relief of Christ in majesty, dated the twelfth century, is a remarkable element inscribed in 1935.
The church was destroyed on 19 June 1944 at the Battle of the Haies, after its bells sounded the Liberation prematurely. In retaliation, the Germans undermined her. Only the choir, inscribed in 1946, and the bas-relief – today in the church of St.Trinity rebuilt in 1955 – remain as testimonies of its past.
Architecturally, the church combined Romanesque characteristics (nave and choir) and later Gothic additions. Its bas-relief, originally embedded in the exterior wall, illustrates Norman medieval religious art. The partial protection of the monument (church and bas-relief) reflects its heritage importance despite its destruction.
The location of the church, on a hill overlooking the marshes, suggests a role both spiritual and strategic in the medieval landscape. After 1944, the remains were preserved as a memory of the Liberation conflicts, while the bas-relief was incorporated into the new parish church.
