The vestiges of the old church, namely the two spans of the nave and their lateral chapels as well as the bell tower, in full (Box AB 665, 666, see plan annexed to the decree): inscription by decree of 28 November 2014
Origin and history
The Church of the Carmelites of Narbonne, classified as a Historical Monument, today only retains the first two spans of its nave, accompanied by two lateral chapels (north and south). The northern chapel is attached to the base of the bell tower, an architectural element still visible. The nave, covered with an apparent structure based on diaphragm arches, features capitals adorned with stylized leaves, typical of Southern Gothic art. These sculptural details, especially in the side chapels, illustrate the style of the second quarter of the 14th century, period of construction of the building.
The official protection of the remains (two spans of the nave, side chapels and bell tower) was provided by a registration order dated 28 November 2014. The monument, now privately owned, is located in the heart of Narbonne, between Voltaire Street and David Street, in an area where the historical location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). No information is available on its current accessibility to the public or on any reallocation (visits, events, etc.).
Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) highlight the importance of these remains as a testimony to 14th century religious architecture in Languedoc. The site, although partially preserved, offers an overview of the constructive techniques and sculpted decoration of the period, characteristic of the Carmelite buildings of the region. The Mérimée base specifies its administrative connection to the commune of Narbonne (code Insee 11262), in the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region.
