Origin and history
The Infournat Church, located in Jouqueviel, Occitanie, is a hybrid building built between the 12th and 14th centuries. It combines a primitive Romanesque structure, characterized by arches in the middle of the circle, and a later Gothic extension. This architectural mix reflects medieval stylistic evolutions, with a marked transition between the two epochs.
The 14th century portal, ogival style, is distinguished by its arch in warhead and its leggings adorned with pinacles with cut leaves. It is integrated under a Roman arched porch, creating a contrast between the two periods. Above the door, a console sculpted by small characters, surmounted by a dais with braces and trilobes, illustrates flamboyant Gothic art. The building, classified as a Historical Monument in 1978, now belongs to the municipality.
The location of the church in the Tarn is part of a territory marked by a high density of medieval religious monuments. These buildings served as spiritual and community centres, playing a key role in the social and agricultural organization of villages. Their architecture, often scalable, reflects local resources and regional artistic influences, as shown by the Infournats portal, where Romanesque and Gothic motifs are mixed.
