Church (cad. AB 45, 94): registration by decree of 31 August 1995

Origin and history

The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montsinéry is a Catholic religious building located in the centre of the village of Montsinéry, one of the two main urban cores of the commune of Montsinéry-Tonnegrande, in French Guiana. It was built between 1860 and 1902, a period marked by the development of colonial and religious infrastructures in this overseas region. Its architecture reflects the necessary adaptations to the tropical climate and local resources available at that time.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 31 August 1995, thereby recognizing its heritage value. This official protection underlines its importance in local and regional history, as well as its role in the community life of Montsinéry. The church is now the property of the municipality, which guarantees its preservation and maintenance for future generations.

The churches in Guyana in the 19th century played a central role in the social and spiritual organization of the villages. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, often scattered in a vast and sparsely urbanized territory. The construction of Saint-Jean-Baptiste church is part of this context of structuring communities around religious buildings, symbols of stability and cohesion in a region in the midst of transformation.
