Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Ponsan-Soubiran, located in Gers in the Occitan region, is a religious building built in the 19th century. It is closely associated with the local landscape, with an immediate proximity to the castle to the south and to the contemporary presbytery, forming a coherent architectural ensemble. This monument illustrates the importance of parish churches in the spatial and social organization of rural villages of this period.
The church was classified as a Historic Monument by order of 24 September 2015, thus protecting the entire building, including its sacristy located at its bedside. The construction or renovation work involved local artisans, including architect Émile Loupot and painter Bertrand Bénézet, whose artistic and technical contributions marked the visual identity of the building. The property of the church today belongs to the municipality of Ponsan-Soubiran.
The location of the church, although documented in the Merimée base with a precise address (32300 Ponsan-Soubiran, 5025 Le Village), is considered to have poor accuracy (level 5/10). This monument, opened to visit under conditions, reflects the religious and cultural heritage of the Midi-Pyrénées region, now integrated into Occitanie. Its recent listing among the Historical Monuments highlights its heritage and architectural value, while inviting a rediscovery of this place full of local history.
