Origin and history

The Saint-Étienne church, located in Baugé-en-Anjou (formerly Fougeré) in Maine-et-Loire, is a monument whose nave and bell tower date back to the 12th century. The choir was built in the first half of the 13th century. These architectural elements bear witness to primitive Romanesque and Gothic styles, characteristic of the churches of this period in Anjou.

In the 19th century, the church underwent major changes. Between 1869 and 1875, the nave was extended by a span and the openings of the north wall were modified under the direction of Abbé Briscier, architect of Tours, following the plans of architect Hardion. On this occasion, the 16th century roofing panel was replaced, and painting was done in 1871 by Grandin, especially on the triumphal arch.

The stained glass of the choir, created by Fialex and Mayet in 1858, as well as the numerous graffiti visible outside the nave (southern wall) and in the bell tower, add to the historical richness of the building. Ranked as historical monuments in 1969, the church now belongs to the commune and remains a major architectural and artistic testimony of the region.

The building is located at the approximate address of 5 Rue du Commerce in Baugé-en-Anjou, in the department of Maine-et-Loire. Its classification in 1969 preserved its heritage, including its medieval elements and its 19th century additions, reflecting centuries of religious and architectural history.
