Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of Alleaume is a Catholic religious building whose origins date back to the 11th century, as evidenced by a carved lintel (circa 1040-1050) depicting the Apostles Peter and Paul, the mystical lamb and the dove of the Holy Spirit. This vestige, considered the oldest in Cotentin, marks its Romanesque anchor. The building, originally located on the former town of Alleaume, is now integrated in Valognes, in the department of Manche.
The church underwent major changes between the 13th and 18th centuries, including its facade, which clearly bears the 18th century footprint. Its current structure includes a two-span choir with flat bedside, a transept and a nave. The furniture includes a monumental altarpiece of the eighteenth century, decorated with four kaolin statues executed in 1808 by Moreau for the manufacture of Valognes, as well as a 15th century Virgin with Child.
Ranked among historical monuments since 18 March 1993, the Church of Notre-Dame d'Alleaume illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of Normandy, mixing medieval heritage and classical influences. Its adjacent cemetery, with a funerary if, reinforces its heritage and memorial character.
The site also houses protected elements such as a gate of the sanctuary, while its exact location (21 Rue du Bourg Fleury) and its Insee code (50615) confirm its anchoring in the religious and historical landscape of Lower Normandy (now Normandy).
