Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame d'Angerville-l'Orcher is a Catholic religious building located in the municipality of the same name, in Seine-Maritime, Normandy. Founded in the 11th century, it retains a nave dating back to this period, while its bell tower was erected in the following century. Its windows were enlarged in the 17th century, reflecting later architectural changes.

The building, built of stone and brick, has notable decorative elements. Inside, a 51-cm-wide seigneurial funeral liter runs through the walls of the northern chapel, and a painted coat of arms evokes the family Du Hamel de Grémonville. Outside, partially altered coats of arms and sculptures of archers and juries adorn the walls, while a 19th century altarpiece, inspired by the 17th century, represents the Presentation to the Temple.

Ranked a historic monument in 1862 for its door and bell tower, the church illustrates Norman architectural and artistic evolution, from medieval origins to modern additions. Its interior and exterior decoration shows links with the local aristocracy, including the Du Hamel family, whose coats of arms are visible in the northern chapel. The alterations suffered by some coats of arms are reminiscent of the vicissitudes of time and human intervention.

The precise location of the building is the 4 Place du Général de Gaulle in Angerville-l'Orcher, in the Seine-Maritime department. A communal property, it remains an active place of worship, attached to the diocese of Le Havre. Its early classification (1862) underlines its heritage importance, confirmed by references in works such as Le Patrimoine des Communes de Seine-Maritime.
