Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame d'Aumâtre, located in the heart of the village of Aumâtre in the department of the Somme, is a religious building built in the thirteenth century. Its architecture has been modified over the centuries by successive renovations, especially until the 19th century. The building, protected by an inscription as historical monuments since 1926, was the subject of restoration work in 2013, including roofing, framework and installation of a lightning rod.
The church consists of a nave with an original collateral, extended by a polygonal bedside choir. Its bell tower, raised on four levels, houses a chapel on the ground floor. The sacristy, later built in red brick, completes the whole. Inside, there is an 18th-century high altar, a carved wooden altarpiece representing a Christ, Saint Marguerite and Saint John the Baptist, as well as a statue of Virgin with the Child. These elements, listed as historical objects, bear witness to the heritage richness of the site.
The Church of Notre-Dame d'Aumâtre is a typical example of Picardie's medieval religious architecture, marked by Gothic influences and subsequent adaptations. Its registration in 1926 and recent works underline its cultural and historical importance for the commune and the Hauts-de-France region.
