Noble Pierre d’Auzolles - Curé and Lord of Lamothe Rebuilder of the church in 1622.

Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame d'Aurice, located in the Landes department, dates from the seventeenth century. It was rebuilt after the wars of Religion, succeeding the chapel of Ones. The building contains a statue of Notre-Dame d'Aurice in carved wood, an important part of its interior heritage. This monument illustrates the post-conflict religious architecture of this troubled period.

The reconstruction of the church was initiated in 1622 by Noble Pierre d'Auzolles, then parish priest and lord of Lamothe. In 1628 he also became parish priest of Aurice and Sainte-Eulalie. Son of an influential noble family, he was linked to several local seigneuries and held important ecclesiastical functions, as a treasurer of the fruits of the bishopric of Aire. Its commitment to reconstruction reflects the role of local elites in restoring religious heritage after destruction.

The church is part of a historical context marked by the religious tensions of the sixteenth century. The Wars of Religion had left many churches in ruins, requiring reconstruction in the next century. The choice of Noble Pierre d'Auzolles to rebuild this building reflects the desire to restore the cult practice and to affirm the Catholic presence in the region. The statue of Notre Dame, always present, symbolizes this spiritual and artistic continuity.
