Romanesque door: inscription by decree of 6 January 1926
Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame de Beaumont-sur-Sarthe is a Catholic building located in the department of Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire region. Its Romanesque door, decorated with saw teeth and masks, is the oldest part of the building. This door, now murmured but pierced by a small opening, has been classified as historical monuments since 6 January 1926. The church has an unusual architecture with a double nave and a main facade decorated with three statues.
The north side of the church dates from the 16th century, while an expansion of the choir in the 17th century led to a change of orientation of the building. Several items of furniture, such as the altarpiece of the high altar, two paintings, a lutrin, the baptismal fonts, two benitiers and sculptures, are classified or listed as historical monuments in the Palissy base. These elements testify to the church's rich heritage and art.
The precise location of the church is in the centre of the village of Beaumont-sur-Sarthe, at the approximate address 2 Rue du Désir. The monument is owned by the commune and is one of the emblematic religious buildings of the Sarthe department. Its architecture and history reflect the stylistic and liturgical evolutions of the 16th and 17th centuries in this region.
