Origin and history
Notre-Dame-de-Beauvert Church, located in Sainte-Jalle, Drôme, is a Romanesque building built in the middle of the 12th century. It replaces a large ancient building, of which Roman elements have been reused, as evidenced by an inscription mentioning an edile of the Pagus. Several altars dedicated to the goddesses Baginatiae, discovered in 1999 during works, confirm his ancient occupation.
The church was the seat of a clunisian priory, a major religious role in the region. It has undergone many changes over the centuries and was damaged during the Wars of Religion. These transformations reflect its continuing importance in local life, despite conflicts and architectural developments.
Ranked a historic monument since 17 July 1926, the church preserves traces of its medieval and ancient past. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its Romanesque architecture and for the associated ancient remains. It remains a testimony of successive layers of St.Jalle's history, from antiquity to modern times.
