Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame de Beine is a religious building located in the commune of Beine, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built mainly in the 13th and 16th centuries, it reflects the architectural and spiritual evolutions of these periods. Its designation as historic monuments in 1984 reflects its recognized heritage value, although the details of its history remain little documented in available sources.
Medieval churches like Beine played a central role in the life of Burgundy rural communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for social and civic events. From the 13th century onwards, religious architecture in this region is often characterized by Gothic influences, while later changes, such as those of the 16th century, can incorporate Renaissance elements.
These buildings were generally financed by local lords or parishes, although the Beine-specific archives do not mention identified sponsors.
