Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Port, built between 1845 and 1858 in Nantes by architects Saint-Félix Seheult and Joseph-Fleury Chenantais, replaces a modest chapel of 1827 which had become insufficient for the growing area. Its official name pays tribute to the Protecting Virgin of the Mariners, but it is also called "Église Saint-Louis" in honour of Louis-Hyacinthe Levesque, the donor mayor. Located on the site of an old Sanitat hospice, it marks the urban extension to the west and the transformation of the harbour district.

Inspired by the Baroque architecture of the Counter-Reform, the church breaks with medievalism: its dome evokes that of the Invalides in Paris, its facade recalls Saint Peter of Rome, and a golden statue of an archangel crowns its arrow. Innovative, its metal frame lightens the dome (60 m high), while its Greek cross plan (38 m side) and its interior decorations – marquetries, wall paintings by Alphonse Le Henaff (1858-1860) – make it an artistic gem. The frieze of the dome, painted with wax on a gold background, celebrates the Immaculate Conception.

The organ, masterpiece of Louis Debierre (1891), marks the return of the neo-classical style with its 3,800 pipes and its pioneering electrical transmission. Ranked a historic monument in 1975 (church and organ), the building remains an active place of worship, despite recent tensions such as the blocking in 2021 of a concert by fundamentalists. The arrow, restored in 2006, and the murals (some covered in the 20th century) testify to its evolution.

The facade, structured in two levels (Doric and Corinthian), incorporates marine symbols: the statue of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Port (1913) has attributes related to the protection of navigators. The dome drum, pierced with windows, has heads of saintly patrons of the Nantes churches. Inside, the chapel Saint-Louis, decorated by Joseph-René Gouézou, and the pulpit illustrate 19th-century religious art. The building, coupled with buildings, is part of a dense urban island.

Owned by the city of Nantes, the church also houses a choir organ acquired in 1932. Its stained-glass windows and decors, such as La Cène d'Henri-Pierre Picou (covered since), reflect liturgical and artistic developments. Classified for its architecture and furniture, it embodies both the Nantes maritime heritage and the urban changes of the Second Empire.
