Origin and history

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Basilica in the Ardennes department is a major Catholic pilgrimage site. Its origin dates back to 1752, when eight children discovered a statuette of the Virgin surrounded by light in the woods of the village. This event, considered miraculous, quickly attracted pilgrims, transforming Neuvizy into a place of devotion known as Le Lourdes Ardennais. A cross was erected in 1818 on the site of the apparition, marking the beginning of a tradition of local Marian devotion.

The construction of the present church began in 1865 under the impetus of Canon Nicolas Valentin, who personally supervised its work, even playing the roles of architect, carpenter and painter. Inspired by Notre-Dame de Paris, the neo-Gothic building was completed in 1876. His stained glass windows, made by the Champigneulle workshops between 1876 and 1897, illustrate biblical scenes and Marian figures, while his walls house ex-votos showing healing attributed to Notre-Dame de Neuvizy.

During the First World War, bells and brass were requisitioned by the Germans. The church was consecrated in 1936 by Bishop Suhard, then elevated to the rank of basilica by Pope John Paul II in 2002. Renovations in 2009 improved its accessibility and visibility, with a ravage of the façade and the installation of new chandeliers. The current organ, installed in 2002, completes this architectural and spiritual ensemble.

The annual pilgrimage, organized every 15 August and in May, perpetuates the memory of the apparition of 1752. The bedside murals trace the life of the Virgin, while two plaques of 1854 recall the indulgences granted by Pope Pius IX to members of the local brotherhood. The basilica remains a symbol of faith and heritage for the Greater East region.
