The bell tower and the sacristy: inscription by decree of 12 February 1927
Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame de Bouin is a religious building located in the commune of Bouin in Vendée, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built mainly in the 14th and early 16th centuries, it embodies medieval and Renaissance religious architecture in this part of western France. Its bell tower and sacristy, registered as Historic Monuments since 1927, testify to its local heritage importance.
At the time of its construction, the region was characterized by a rural and maritime economy, particularly linked to marshes and livestock. Churches, like Bouin, played a central role in community life, serving as a place of worship, assembly and symbol of power for local lords or religious institutions. Their architecture often reflected the resources and artistic influences available in the region, sometimes combining late Gothic styles and reborn elements, as seems to be the case here.
