Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame de Bunzac, classified as a Historic Monument, is distinguished by a composite structure reflecting several epochs. Its 12th century circular sanctuary, vaulted in cul-de-four, is extended by a cross of transept supporting a partially vaulted bell tower, surmounted by a dome on pendants. The nave, dating from the beginning of the 12th century, was originally designed for an apparent structure, while the newly built north and south cruises contrast with the ancient Romanesque structure.
The building was registered under the Historic Monuments by order of 4 January 1934, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the municipality of Bunzac, in the Charente department (code Insee 16067), the church is located at approximately 5 Place de l'Église Saint-Symphorien, although the accuracy of its location is considered mediocre (note 5/10). Its architecture thus blends medieval heritage with later additions, illustrating the evolution of local constructive practices.
The available sources, including the Monumentum database and the Mérimée data, underline its importance in the religious and architectural landscape of the Poitou-Charentes, now integrated into the New Aquitaine region. No information is provided on its current accessibility (visits, rental, accommodation), or on any historical figures related to its foundation or restoration.
