Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame de Camy is located in the hamlet of Camy, on the commune of Payrac, in the Lot department in the Occitanie region. Founded in the 12th century, it underwent major changes between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, after the destruction caused by the Hundred Years' War. These transformations have profoundly altered its original aspect, while maintaining medieval elements.
The building experienced further deterioration, especially in the 19th century, where original paintings on the vault and the north elevation of the choir were covered with a coating. The roof has since been restored, but the bell tower, weakened, no longer supports the vibrations of the bells. Part of the original decor, such as the 19th-century "starry sky", remains visible although altered by time.
Ranked a historical monument by decree of 18 December 2023, the church belongs to the municipality of Payrac. Its history reflects regional upheavals, between medieval conflicts and later architectural adaptations. The site also includes an old cemetery, now integrated into its protected perimeter.
