Clocher, choeur, transept (Case D 431) : classification by decree of 19 April 1974

Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame de Cheffes is a religious building located in the commune of Cheffes, Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built in the twelfth century, it is a typical example of the medieval religious architecture of this period. Its bell tower, choir and transept were classified as historical monuments by decree of 19 April 1974, thus underlining its heritage importance.

At the time of its construction in the 12th century, the region was marked by intense religious and agricultural activity. Churches, like Chieffes, played a central role in community life, serving as a place of worship, assembly and symbol of local power. They were often built with contributions from local lords or village communities, reflecting their attachment to the Christian faith and their territory.

Today, the Church of Notre-Dame de Cheffes remains an architectural testimony of this time, with protected elements such as the bell tower, the choir and the transept. It is owned by the commune of Cheffes and continues to mark the local landscape, while being referenced in heritage bases such as Mérimée and the Observatory of Religious Heritage.
