Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame de Courson is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Courson, now integrated with the municipality of Noues de Siena, in the department of Calvados in Normandy. Its construction dates back to the 16th century, a period marked by an architectural renewal and an affirmation of regional styles, especially in Normandy's rural areas. The building illustrates the construction techniques of the time, with particular attention to wooden frames and vaults, characteristic elements of the churches of this region.
The church was partially protected under the Historic Monuments: the whole building, with the exception of the parts already classified, was registered by order of 19 September 1928. Later, remarkable elements such as the wooden vault, the frame and the cover were specifically classified on 2 July 1973. These protective measures highlight the heritage value of the building, both for its architecture and its role in local history.
The sources available, notably the works of Arcisse de Caumont in his monumental Statistics of Calvados (1857), mention the church as a representative example of the religious heritage of Virois and Bessin. The monument, owned by the commune, remains a testament to the constructive practices and cultural traditions of Lower Normandy during the Renaissance. Its current location, reported at Address 15 Route de la Libération à Noues de Siena, confirms its anchoring in the historical and contemporary landscape of the region.
