Origin and history

The Church of Our Lady of Courtefontaine is a religious building built in the 12th century, located in the commune of Courtefontaine, in the Jura department (39). This monument, classified as a historical monument in 1875, bears witness to the Romanesque architecture of the region. Its listing in 1875 underlines its heritage importance and its preservation as a communal property.

The location of the church at 5080 Rue de l'Église is documented in the Merimée base, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note of 5/10). This type of building, typical of the Middle Ages, played a central role in the spiritual and social life of the villages of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Romanesque churches served not only as places of worship, but also as community landmarks, often associated with local agricultural and artisanal activities.

Available sources, including Monumentum, indicate that the church is still linked to the municipality of Courtefontaine, although its current status (open to visit, rent, etc.) is not specified. The Creative Commons license associated with a photograph of the monument suggests a contemporary interest in its value and cultural diffusion.
