Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame de Crans, located in the Ain department in the commune of Crans, is a religious building built at the end of the thirteenth century in the Gothic style. It is distinguished by its flat bedside pierced by three Cistercian lancettes, typical of this architectural period. Its 19th century oak awning and its Gothic-style interior structure, also from the 19th century, reflect later stylistic evolutions.
The church was listed as historic monuments by order of 21 October 1926, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the municipality of Crans, it is located precisely at 152 Chemin du Cimetière. Its architecture therefore combines original medieval elements, such as lancettes, with more recent additions, reflecting the restorations and adaptations suffered over the centuries.
The monument is part of the religious landscape of the Dombes region, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, an area marked by a strong presence of Cistercian and Gothic buildings. Its inscription among the historical monuments of Ain makes it an important witness to the local architectural and spiritual heritage, linked to medieval history and subsequent evolutions of sacred art.
