Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame de Fresles is a Catholic church located in the commune of Fresles in the Seine-Maritime region of Normandy. Its history is partly known, but we know that the site was occupied from the French era. The current building was built in the 13th century, with the addition of a porch in the 18th century. Ranked a historic monument in 1970, it retains notable architectural and artistic elements, such as 15th century murals and a retable of the same period.

The church is built of flint, a material typical of the region. It houses liturgical furniture dating from the 13th to the 18th century, including a Eucharistic tower. The murals, although partially erased, testify to the artistic and religious importance of the place. The 1970 classification protects both the building and its interior decorations, highlighting its heritage value.

Fresles, like many Norman villages, was a rural and religious place of life in the Middle Ages. Parish churches, like Notre-Dame, played a central role in community life, serving as a place of worship, gathering and preserving local traditions. The addition of the porch in the 18th century reflects an architectural evolution and an adaptation to the needs of the faithful of the time.
