Origin and history

Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption d'Aigrefeuille-sur-Maine Church, located in the Loire-Atlantique department, is a Catholic religious building built between 1897 and 1900. It embodies the flamboyant neo-Gothic style, with a centered plan, and stands out for its 27 stained glass windows and two rosettes. The building also houses the only monument to the dead of the commune, installed in the northern chapel of the choir, including a statue of Jeanne d'Arc.

The church is built under the direction of architect François Bougoüin. In 1919 he was also responsible for designing the monument to the dead, the statue of which was entrusted to the Dutch sculptor Joseph Vallet. After the death of Vallet in 1920, the marbrier Rivière completed the monument, inaugurated in 1922. The stained glass windows, commissioned in 1923 at the house G. P. Dagrant and brothers of Bordeaux, were placed between July 1923 and March 1924, and blessed on 8 June 1924.

The church contains an object classified as historical monuments: a silver ostensoir dating from 1807. The building itself has been listed as historic monuments since October 5, 2007. The stained glass windows were restored in 2001 by the firm Vitroil SARL de Remouillé, ensuring the preservation of this artistic and historical heritage.
