Origin and history

Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Church in Blaymont is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Blaymont, Lot-et-Garonne, New Aquitaine. Built in the 13th century in a Romanesque style, it is distinguished by its unique nave, its steep bell tower with Romanesque openings, and an elevated apse forming a round path. Four columns with carved capitals, dating from the Romanesque period, still remain in the transept.

The church underwent reshuffles in the 14th century, including the addition of chapels on the crucifixes of the transept. Its cradle vaults were later rebuilt, while the interior, although restored, retains original elements such as the mulled porch on the southern facade. A truncated round turret, housing the staircase of the bell tower, completes this characteristic architectural ensemble.

Classified as a historic monument since 4 December 1951, the church belongs to the commune of Blaymont. Its square bell tower, robust and pierced square openings, dominates the local landscape. Historical sources, such as Georges Tholin's studies (1883), underline its importance in the religious heritage of the Agenas, an area marked by a strong presence of Romanesque buildings.

The site is referenced in the Mérimée base and associated with heritage resources such as Clochers de France or the Observatoire du Patrimoine Religiouse. Its official address (47470 Blaymont) and its Insee code (47030) confirm its territorial anchor in Lot-et-Garonne, near Agen. The accuracy of its location is assessed as "very satisfactory" (note 8/10).
