The choir and the bell tower: inscription by decree of 6 December 1948
Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Cause-de-Clérans, located in the eponymous village of Dordogne, dates from the 12th century. It illustrates the Romanesque architecture of the region, with a characteristic bell tower decorated with six simple columns and surmounted by a pyramidal roof. This bell tower rests on a round dome, itself supported by Romanesque pillars carved of characters, typical elements of local medieval art.
The church choir and bell tower were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of December 6, 1948, recognizing their heritage value. The structure, owned by the municipality, preserves traces of its medieval origin, although some parts may have evolved over the centuries. Its exact location, in the Dordogne department (code Insee 24088), is documented in the Merimée base.
The building is part of a historical context where parish churches played a central role in community life. In the 12th century, the region, then integrated into the Duchy of Aquitaine, was marked by intense religious and architectural activity, with the construction of many Romanesque buildings. These churches served not only as places of worship, but also as social and cultural landmarks for the surrounding rural populations.
