Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption of Champagne-sur-Oise, located in the Val-d'Oise in Île-de-France, is an emblematic monument of radiant Gothic architecture. Its construction began around 1160-1170 with absidioles and transept, before an interruption of about 40 years. The works resumed under the reign of Saint Louis (1230-1240), which founded a chapel in 1239 and directly influenced the construction site, inspired by major Parisian projects such as the Sainte-Chapelle or the cathedral of Amiens. The nave, of remarkable elegance, is distinguished by its plated arches simulating a triforium and its high triangular windows, a rare motif in Île-de-France.

In the 15th century, the crossover of the transept was redesigned in the flamboyant Gothic style, with wavy piles decorated with carved friezes representing animals, characters and plant motifs. A tref is added under the triumphal arch, although its statues disappeared during the Revolution. The two-storey bell tower combines Romanesque elements (first floor inspired by Nesles-la-Vallée) and Gothic (second floor slender), and is one of the most beautiful in the department.

Ranked a historic monument in 1862, the church was restored from 1870, but these works, although salvators, partially altered its external authenticity. The Renaissance porch (XVI century) in front of the south side gate, vaulted with warheads and decorated with statue niches, as well as the 13th century Virgin with Child on its fog, testify to its rich sculptural heritage. Inside, the choir, although small, presents a refined architecture with capitals carved from various plant motifs (trèfle, fern, vine).

The apsidioles, among the oldest parts, probably date from the 12th century and retain Romanesque features, such as arches in the middle of acanthe and acanthe-leaf capitals. Their presence suggests continuity with an earlier church. The furniture includes classified items, including a 13th or 14th century Virgin with the Child, 16th century baptismal fonts, and a 17th century monumental altarpiece.

Under the Ancien Régime, Champagne-sur-Oise depended on the diocese of Beauvais and then Versailles after the Revolution. Today attached to the diocese of Pontoise (1966), the church remains an active place of worship within a parish group. Its history reflects the architectural and religious evolutions of the region, from the donations of Dagobert I (635) to modern restorations, to royal influence under Saint Louis.
