The span preceding the choir with its sides and circular sanctuary: ranking by decree of 24 December 1913
Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption of Colombey-les-Deux-Églises is a Catholic religious building located in the department of Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region. Built in the twelfth century, it embodies the Romanesque architecture typical of this period, marked by simple forms and strong religious symbolism. Its location in this rural village reflects the importance of parish churches as spiritual and community centres in the Middle Ages.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 24 December 1913, this church is distinguished notably by its span preceding the choir, its sides and its circular sanctuary. These architectural elements, protected for their heritage value, illustrate the construction techniques and artistic influences of the period. The management of the building is now the responsibility of the municipality of Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, stressing its local anchor and its role in collective memory.
The village of Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, like many rural localities in the Haute-Marne, was in the 12th century organized around agriculture, crafts and religious life. The churches, often built of stone, served not only as places of worship, but also as social and cultural landmarks for the inhabitants. Their preservation throughout the centuries bears witness to their lasting importance in the landscape and local history.
