Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Gemeaux is a religious building whose origins date back to the 13th and 15th centuries. Located in the village of Gemeaux, in the Côte d'Or (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté), it illustrates late medieval sacred architecture, with characteristic elements of these two periods. Its partial inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1925 specifically concerns the western facade and a 15th century stone tabernacle, testifying to the artistic richness of the period.
The location of the church, at 6 Rue Gemelot, is documented in the Merimée base, with geographical accuracy considered to be satisfactory a priori. Owned by the municipality, this place of worship is part of a rural Burgundy context marked, in medieval times, by a community life centered around parish churches. The latter served not only as a place of prayer, but also as a social and cultural landmark for the inhabitants.
Available data from Monumentum and the internal archives highlight the heritage value of the building, particularly through its protected elements. The lack of details on its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation) or on possible historical sponsors, however, limits the knowledge of its social history. The Creative Commons license associated with photographs of the monument, such as that of Christophe.Finot, facilitates its dissemination and digital enhancement.
