Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption de Gras, located in the department of Ardèche, is a building built in the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, as evidenced by the date of 1652 engraved on its eardrum. It probably succeeds an older building, perhaps of Romanesque origin, and reuses elements of the old castle of the village. Its architecture integrates with the ramparts of Gras: one of the medieval towers serves as a bell tower, while the plan adopts a unique nave extended by a three-sided apse. Inside, the nave is arched in the middle of the hanger and the choir in cul-de-four, with a painted 19th-century decor adorning the vaults and the abside.
The inscription of the church as historical monuments, effective since 23 July 1992, protects a heritage marked by medieval re-uses and a remarkable trompe-l'oeil decoration. The blue-grey caissons painted in the abside, the musical instruments on the triumphal arch and the medallions of saints on the vault of the nave illustrate a late artistic heritage. Owned by the municipality, the building thus retains the traces of its central role in the religious and community life of Gras, from its Baroque reconstruction to its contemporary preservation.
The location of the church, 22 Rue de l'Eglise in Gras (07700), and its integration with the old fortifications underline its historic importance in this ardéchois village. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its status as a key element of local heritage, combining defensive and religious architecture. Its state of conservation and its openness to the public (unspecified) bear witness to the urban and cultural transformations of the region since the seventeenth century.
