Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Laubressel, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building built in the sixteenth century. It was the seat of a parish dependent on the Grand Dean of Troyes, with decimators such as Larritour Abbey and Notre-Dame-aux-Nonnais. Its architecture, marked by a three-sided apse and a wooden belfry replacing a bell tower destroyed by lightning in 1885, reflects the characteristics of the churches of the Dawn of this period.

Inside, the church houses remarkable furniture, including a funerary slab of Nicol Fleury, ancient tiles, a Virgin with Child and 16th century glass windows. The Renaissance portal, dated 1560, and the star vaults of the choir and transept bear witness to its architectural importance. A classified cemetery cross and an equestrian statue of St George once completed its exterior environment.

The building was listed as historic monuments in 2006. Its brick porch, added in the early twentieth century, replaced an old wooden porch. The church illustrates the reconstruction of the churches of the Dawn in the 16th century, with stylistic influences of the Renaissance and a spatial organization typical of the rural churches of the region.

The precise location of the church is 40 Rue du Haut in Labressel, in the Aube department (code Insee 10190). It belongs to the commune and retains protected elements, such as the 16th century stained glass windows and the carved gate. Its history is linked to that of Troyes and Champagne-Ardenne, now integrated into the Grand Est region.
