Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Livré-la-Touche, located in the department of Mayenne in Pays de la Loire, is a Catholic building built over the 15th and 16th centuries. It is distinguished by its Romanesque architecture in russard sandstone, marked by a side bell tower with a slate belfry, a dome and a lantern. The gate in the middle of the hangar, reinforced after the Hundred Years' War, and the flamboyant windows of the sides testify to its stylistic evolution. The bell tower, overthrown by a storm in 1711, was rebuilt by a local carpenter.

According to some sources, the church was founded by Robert d'Arbrissel, an emblematic religious figure in the region. His story is also marked by the 1906 inventory, which gave rise to a three-hour resistance despite the presence of the gendarmes. Inside, the building houses a monumental table in tuffeau and marble, executed by Jean-Baptiste Simon in the 17th century, as well as 18th century side retables retaining their original status. A 17th century painting depicting the Rosary and stained glass windows by Rathouis, produced by the Carmel du Mans workshops, enrich its artistic heritage.

The church, surrounded by its original cemetery, is one of the few Romanesque churches still standing in the canton, with that of Mea. His high altar, dated 1861, includes a golden wooden tabernacle made by Antoine Dymkovski, Polish prince refugee in Craon. Classified as a historical monument since 1 August 1974, it illustrates both the medieval architectural heritage and subsequent transformations, reflecting the religious and social history of the Mayenne.
