Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Montjoie-en-Couserans is a Romanesque religious building located in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region. Initiated at the end of the 12th century, it was redesigned in the 14th and 16th centuries, incorporating defensive elements like two towers surrounding a bell tower wall. Its architecture reflects this dual vocation, both a place of worship and a fortified point, characteristic of the churches of this border region.
The façade, classified as a historic monument in 1901, dates from the late 12th century and has late Romanesque features. The campanile and archvolt of the door, remodeled in the 14th century, as well as the turrets extended in the 16th century, testify to the successive adaptations. The latter retain traces of their former crenelage, now embedded in the masonry. Access to crenelated galleries, served by a staircase located in the right turret, underscores its defensive role.
Founded as part of the Royal Bastide of Montjoie-en-Couserans, created in 1268 by Alphonse de Poitiers in collaboration with the bishop of Couserans, this church is part of a historical context marked by the construction of new cities and the securing of territories. Its location at 454 meters above sea level, near Saint-Girons, reinforces its strategic importance in the region.
Today, the church benefits from the commitment of the association Les Amis du Patrimoine Religious et Communal de Montjoie-en-Couserans, active since 2006 for its preservation. This monument thus illustrates both the Romanesque heritage, the late medieval adaptations and the vitality of the local heritage in Occitanie.
