Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption of Pierrefontaine-les-Varans is a religious building built in 1782 in the Doubs department in Franche-Comté. It was erected according to the plans of architect Cachot, whose name remains associated with its design. This building illustrates the architectural style of the 18th century, marked by a sobriety and harmony typical of the rural churches of that time.
The church was included in the inventory of historical monuments on 13 June 1991, thus recognizing its heritage value. It houses remarkable furniture, including an organ of 1882 signed Louis Callinet et fils, classified in 1997, as well as a confessional and a altarpiece of the baptismal fonts of the eighteenth century, inscribed in 1992. These elements testify to the artistic and cultural richness of the place.
Located in the parish of Pierrefontaine-les-Varans, the church depends on the diocese of Besançon. Its role in the local community, both spiritually and socially, reflects the importance of religious buildings in structuring the villages of Franche-Comté at the end of the Old Regime. The preservation of its movable and architectural heritage makes it a place of historical memory and transmission.
