Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption of Sainte-Marie-de-Campan, located in Campan in the Hautes-Pyrénées, is an 18th-century historical monument. It is distinguished by its unique nave extended by a pentagonal bedside, around which the sacristy, porch and bell tower are articulated. The porch, typical of the religious architecture of the time, is composed of marble arcades in the middle of the hanger and houses a studded wooden door framed with marble.
In the second half of the 18th century, the church was significantly enlarged from the western massif between 1769 and 1778. Inside, the building is decorated with panelling, and a wooden stand, accessible by two side stairs, occupies the back of the nave. The bell tower, square in shape, is directly adowed to the nave, strengthening the architectural structure.
The church was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 6 March 1989. It belongs to the commune of Campan and is located at 4962 Route des Deux Cols. Its architecture and decorative elements, such as the marble porch, testify to the local craftsmanship and stylistic evolutions of the eighteenth century in Occitanie.
