Origin and history
Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Mont-Saxonnex is a French Catholic church located in the Haute-Savoie department in the commune of Mont-Saxonnex. It occupies a strategic location, on a rocky hill between Bonneville and Cluses, overlooking the Arve Valley. This geographical positioning gives it remarkable visibility in the local landscape.
The current building was built between 1829 and 1834, replacing an older church whose history remains poorly documented in the available sources. Its architecture adopts the Sardinian neoclassical style, characteristic of the region at that time, with a Greek cross-shaped structure. This stylistic choice reflects the cultural and religious influences of Savoy in the early 19th century.
The church is part of the diocese of Annecy and is part of the religious heritage of Haute-Savoie. Its history is linked to the evolution of Catholicism in this Alpine region, marked by a strong cultural and religious identity. The building is today an architectural testimony of this period, while playing a central role in local community life.
