Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Verrières-le-Buisson is a Catholic parish church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Located in the Essonne department, it dominates the Bièvre valley and the Château Vaillant, in the historical site of the village. Its architecture combines elements from the twelfth, fourteenth and nineteenth centuries, reflecting its evolution through the medieval and modern periods.
The building was built from the 11th century and completed at the end of the 13th century. He suffered major damage during the Hundred Years' War and the wars of Religion, including a fire. A partial reconstruction took place in the 16th century, followed by a restoration campaign in 1881, where the gate and the bell tower were completely rebuilt. These works marked its current appearance, with an imposing rosette and a square bell tower surmounted by an arrow in slate.
The church presents a traditional plan with a nave arched of warheads, two collaterals, and a flat bedside. The southwest gate, framed by foothills and surmounted by a rosette, opens onto a gable decorated with a stone cross. The bell tower, accessible by a screw turret, houses a clock and is covered with a pyramidal roof. The building, built in millstone and limestone, combines sobriety and architectural elegance.
Partially classified as historical monuments since 31 January 1972, the church excludes from its protection bell tower, tympanum, portal and sacristy. It remains a testimony to the architectural and historical transformations of the region, while serving as an active place of worship for the local community.
Its interior contains remarkable elements such as a wooden stand, torso mouldings and modillons. The sundial, now destroyed, and the court are part of the notable exterior arrangements. The church, owned by the commune, continues to play a central role in the religious and cultural heritage of Verrières-le-Buisson.
