Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Annonciation, located in La Chaize-Giraud in Vendée (Pays de la Loire), is a Catholic building dating back to the 12th century. Although partially rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, it retains significant vestiges of its medieval period, including its poitevin Romanesque façade decorated with an open portal, as well as a south arm of the transept with a geminous Gothic-style window. A small Romanesque door, located on the north side, also bears witness to this distant time.

Classified as historical monuments by decree of 10 February 1921, the church is distinguished by its hybrid architecture, combining Romanesque and Gothic. The classification covers the entire building, with the exception of the bell tower, and highlights its heritage importance. The municipality of La Chaize-Giraud now owns it, and the church remains an emblematic place of local heritage, marked by centuries of religious and architectural history.

The partial reconstruction of the 19th century has changed part of its structure, but the preserved elements of the 12th century, such as the facade and the geminated window, offer a valuable insight into Poitevin Roman art and its evolution towards Gothicism. These characteristics are a representative example of the rural churches of Vendée, where regional influences and historical transformations intersect.

The site is located precisely at 2 Place de l'Église, in an environment that reflects the urban and historical fabric of La Chaize-Giraud. Its state of conservation and heritage value make it a point of interest for the study of religious architecture in the Pays de la Loire, while remaining anchored in local life as a place of worship and collective memory.
